Legal Aid Family Law Unit

CCLA`s Family Law Division provides free and experienced representation in family law matters, including domestic violence, restraining orders, divorce, paternity and human trafficking. In addition to direct client representation, we continued to focus on our systemic efforts around these topics. Our domestic violence and family law advocates are actively involved in efforts to improve collaboration and services for survivors of domestic violence and work on numerous committees with other district attorneys. We also seek to modify child support court procedures and attend meetings with other service agencies and community stakeholders to address emerging issues and trends. Our domestic violence and family law lawyers represent clients in a variety of intrafamilial matters before the Washington Superior Court. We represent survivors of domestic violence who are seeking civil protection orders against perpetrators. Since 2012, we have been present in the two domestic violence shelters in D.C. (northwest in the courthouse and S.E. in the Anacostia Professional Building) to improve access to our services and provide important same-day support to clients. The PLA`s Family Law Division works to help survivors of domestic and sexual violence leave abusive relationships and build the lives of their choice. The Representation Information and Guidance for Human Trafficking Survivors (RIGHTS) program provides comprehensive, free civil justice services to trafficking survivors living in Broward County. RIGHTS is a holistic, trauma-informed legal program. In this approach, a survivor does not have to share their experiences with multiple lawyers, but works with a single lawyer on multiple legal issues.

Legal services in this area include: expungements, T visas, civil injunctions, divorces, name changes, and parental responsibility. RIGHTS services are free and there are no financial restrictions. In New York State, a married person may be required by law to provide for the maintenance of his or her spouse during his or her marriage if the spouse does not have sufficient income or assets to support himself or her reasonable needs. Our attorneys, staff and volunteers handle civil cases free of charge for Minnesota`s most vulnerable people. With expertise and compassion, we work to provide fundamental legal protection so that our clients can achieve safety, autonomy and access to opportunities. In addition to direct legal representation, we work with policy makers and advocate for equal rights and protection of the law. Our clients trying to break free from domestic violence often face barriers such as limited English proficiency or mental health issues stemming from a history of violence that prevent them from effectively advocating for themselves. Our services help them succeed in the legal system. In addition to our expertise in legal services, we work with community organizations to provide assistance with crisis intervention, security planning, and short- and long-term consultation. Our services help survivors of violence, stability, self-reliance and economic empowerment enter their lives.
