“We strongly believe that the concept of the rule of law is meaningless until it means unrestricted access to justice, especially for impoverished members of the community,” Morota said. He further explains that the project will provide basic legal education to community members in the surrounding areas through their various community programs. “We are well aware that access to basic education is commercialized in this country because poor members of the community are disadvantaged,” he notes. According to Kole, the establishment of legal clinics in other regions brings back the dignity of black students and Unisa communities to receive justice and quality education. Under the leadership of lawyer Kgagudi Morota, Unisa Law Clinic has expanded its presence to three South African provinces to provide free legal assistance and representation before any court, tribunal or body before which a litigant may be represented by a lawyer. He adds: “We are intensifying the notion of an African university serving humanity – we cannot call ourselves African if we continue to limit our legal clinic to Pretoria and maintain the status quo.” Website Link: www.ru.ac.za/law/resources/lawclinic/ These annual programs bridge the gap between theory and practice. In addition, these programs provide pragmatic skills to Unisa law students to be effective and competitive in legal practice. www.ufs.ac.za/law/public-law-divisions/ufs-law-clinic-home Three new Unisa avocado clinics opened on 26 May, 1 July and 8 July 2022 in Polokwane, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. This community engagement project also focuses on implementing the clinic`s projects for students, such as traffic law, advocacy, student debate, and practical legal education. The Unisa Legal Clinic deals with issues such as divorce, alimony, domestic violence and eviction, as well as civil, labor and impact conflicts. However, legal clinics do not provide services to the Traffic Accident Fund (RAF), estate administration, liquidation matters, patent transfer, copyright, trademark, medical negligence, corporate representation and the drafting of wills.
