Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance

Since 1968, GBLA has helped thousands of low-income individuals, families with young children, seniors, and communities with basic legal needs in a variety of areas, including housing and homelessness, domestic violence, guardianship, child and family services, health law, consumer law, labour law and other areas of support that were previously inaccessible without paying high fees and costs. Many of the issues we address and support relate to helping vulnerable populations access basic necessities such as health care, adequate housing, education and food. Other issues include preventing homelessness, reducing domestic violence, including protecting children from other forms of family violence, promoting stable child care, and ensuring that our older adults live with dignity and respect in an environment free from abuse and neglect. GBLA helps administer the Kern County Volunteer Counsel Program, which conducts the following types of activities: (1) legal advice and advice or representation; (2) clinics, including law students; and (3) community legal training. Interested lawyers should contact the program directly. Founded in 1968, Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, Incorporated (GBLA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals residing in its service area in Kern County, California.
