Kirkland & Ellis and Davis, Polk & Wardwell, meanwhile, were just behind Wachtell in terms of earnings per partner, with earnings per partner in shares of $7.388 million and $7.01 million, respectively, the U.S. attorney reports in another article. Earnings per equity partner for Global 100 companies averaged $1,903,000 in 2020, up 10.4% from the 2019 average of $1,723,000. This significant increase comes after a growth of only 0.4% compared to the previous year in 2019. Seventy-nine companies reached or exceeded $1 million in PEP, up from $75 million last year. Slaughter and May was the highest-ranked non-American. Company, 27th place. A law firm on the list of the super rich stands out. Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz made a profit of $8.4 million per partner, $3.86 million in revenue per attorney and a profit of $2.66 million per attorney last year, according to American Lawyer articles here and here. As usual, Wachtell Lipton took the Number 1 spot with an incredible $7.5 million in PPEP. But Kirkland & Ellis, the No. 2 company in recent years, was ousted from second place by Davis Polk at $6.35 million. If it turns out that 2021 will be like 2020, it`s conceivable that Davis Polk could replace Wachtell as the No.
1 in next year`s rankings (but based on the good year M&A has had so far, I wouldn`t necessarily count on that). As for the rest of the top ten, there wasn`t much movement, with the exception of the rise of Cahill and Debevoise (which the ranking of earnings by lawyer indicated). In total, 14 companies now have earnings per partner of more than $5 million (up from six in 2020). In line with Biglaw`s long-standing theme of “the rich get richer,” the PPEP`s growth was strongest at the top of the Am 100 law. While the top quartile increased the PPEP by 22.7%, the lower quartile of the Am 100 law only managed an increase of 7.7%. Regardless of their firm`s ranking, most Am Law 100 partners would have a hard time complaining about 2021. This figure, which will be released next month, will undoubtedly show the booming value of holding shares in the world`s most prestigious law firms. Many of the numbers reported by AmLaw so far have been staggering. Cooley, for example, told AmLaw that the company`s earnings per partner increased by nearly $900,000 from the previous year — a 28 percent increase — to $4 million. Overall, here`s what the Am 100 law achieved in 2021 (as Patrick Smith mentioned in his data summary): But at least collectively, the Am 100 law did not increase its profits by reducing the number of employees of lawyers or even partners. The total number of lawyers even increased slightly by 1.7% to 105,718, and the number of partners remained unchanged (down by only 12 partners to 21,258 new partners). The past year has been incredible for the Am Law 100, the 100 largest law firms in the country, ranked by revenue, as we learned in the spring when the latest ranking was released.
For firms that are a notch below the Am Law 100 — firms ranked No. 101 to No. 200 in terms of total revenue, a group the U.S. attorney calls the “Second Hundred” — last year was also excellent, but not as large as for the top 100 firms. As a result, the gap between Am Law 100 and Second Hundred Firms continued to grow in 2021, as it has been for years. That`s money that big legal partners can`t lose – unlike the paper profits that most pandemic darlings (and in-house lawyers, whose big salaries often include a large portion of the shares that aren`t acquired) give up. Some of the impressive revenue growth can be explained by harder-working lawyers. According to data from the 61 firms that provided billing figures to the American Lawyer, billed hours increased by 5.7% compared to 2020. Meanwhile, the number of employees in the Am 100 law has increased by only 2.1%. As we can confirm at Lateral Link, companies have been eager to add talent in 2021, but growing ranks has been challenging given the intense competition.
Here are the top 10 companies in the Am Law 100 2022 ranking, ranked according to their gross turnover in 2021. You can access the full list here. Big Law`s earnings are then likely to fluctuate from record highs. Large companies have always had to fall victim to their own success – and their revision. Today, they face rising costs and increasing economic uncertainty. Wachtell didn`t do so well on the Am Law 100, which values law firms based on their gross revenue in 2021. Wachtell arrived at number 45. Here`s how the Second Hundred have behaved as a band in 2021, according to the latest Am Law 200 ranking (which came out some time ago and I`m reporting late; the last few weeks have been hectic, in legal news and for me personally): In other words, partners shouldn`t be trapped in their own trillion-dollar fantasies.
What has increased will probably come down. On the plus side, this also counts for the long hours that lawyers have invested. Wachtell is the first Am Law 100 firm to generate $8 million in profits per partner, and it is the only law firm with more than $3 million in revenue per lawyer. He is one of 40 law firms on the super-rich list, which includes law firms with revenues of at least $1.1 million per lawyer and at least $550,000 in revenue per lawyer. It is possible that the average profit per partner in the AmLaw 100 has increased by up to 20% in the last year. This is in addition to a growth of 13% in 2020. That`s a big jump from the recent earnings growth trend of 6% over the past three years. Managing partners will face a similar messaging challenge. You need to convince partners that lower profits are not an inherent failure – this is to be expected. Still, you can`t feel too bad for the average partner of a second hundred companies: making nearly $1 million a year isn`t too shabby.
And as you can see in the earnings by partner ranking at the end of this article, partners from renowned companies like Boies Schiller Flexner, Irell & Manella, Munger Tolles & Olson, Susman Godfrey, and Williams & Connolly have made millions, in the plural. If earnings growth is 20%, the unexpected pandemic boom would have earned AmLaw`s average partner about $460,000 more over the past two years than if earnings had risen to their long-term trend line. And finally, everyone`s favorite ranking: the top 10 companies by profit per equity partner. You can access the full list here. Nine other BigLaw law firms have joined the U.S. attorney`s “Super Rich” list released this week, as well as the publication`s list of the 100 most profitable law firms in 2021. Large law firms are not listed on the stock exchange. The closest industry equivalent is AmLaw`s annual earnings per partner publication. Gross sales of the Am Law 100 increased by 14.8% in 2021, although the number of employees of companies increased by only 2.1% on average.
Revenue per lawyer increased by an average of 12.5%, while earnings per partner and net income increased by 19.4%. Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz remain at the top of the list with a profit of $8.4 million per partner. For the entire Am 100 law, the average PEP increased by 19% in 2021. These figures are excellent, much higher than the previous year`s figures for the second hundred – increases of 1.1, 3.0 and 8.8% respectively. But compare them to the am law 100 increases in 2021: last week, the U.S. attorney released his highly anticipated Am Law 100 ranking for 2021. As a group, you can find out how the Am 100 law behaved in 2020 (as Dan Packel noted in his excellent data analysis): industry-specific and widely studied technical data (partly from exclusive partnerships). A paid subscription is required for full access. The average partner will earn $2.68 million in 2021 if they expect 20% growth. How did Biglaw perform in 2021 and come out of its surprisingly strong performance in 2020? In short: better. Much better.
Based on the financial measures reported this week in the latest edition of Am Law 100, biglaw`s latest round of salary increases makes perfect sense. Of course, most companies generated record gross revenues, revenues per lawyer, and profits per partner. But this is true in a typical good year. What made 2021 such an explosion was that many companies significantly accelerated their growth rates on these indicators compared to 2020 – a year that itself was hailed as a stunning success. No matter how you look at it, 2021 has truly been a memorable year for the De Biglaw elite. Now let`s take a closer look at the top three indicators — gross revenue, revenue per lawyer, and earnings per equity partner — and the top 10 companies in each category.
