The IPHC often establishes long-term relationships with co-operatives in a limited role as General Counsel, providing one-time services and brief advice to eligible co-operatives. Aaron O`Toole, another pro bono lawyer, supported a co-op with a particularly complicated deal to take over shares and transfer membership, which allowed a long-time co-op member to pass on his membership to his children. LawHelpNY.org provides legal information to New Yorkers who can`t afford a lawyer. LawHelpNY lists more than 600 free legal advice projects and organizations with their contact and registration information, as well as more than 4,000 knowledge of your rights and self-help resources covering 16 areas of law. Monday Night Law – the legal advice program held on Mondays at the New York City Bar Association and other days at the New York County Lawyers Association – has been cancelled until further notice. The City Bar Justice Center`s legal hotline provides legal information, advice, and recommendations to low-income New Yorkers who can`t afford a private lawyer or don`t have access to legal representation. The hotline can help you with civil law issues, including marriage and family law, housing law, domestic violence, bankruptcy, as well as debt collection and social benefits. HCPI is a joint project of the NLSP and University Legal Services that aims to provide legal services and asset management support to limited-capital housing co-operatives (“LECs”) and other co-operatives serving low-income residents. Thanks to the support of Gary Thompson, a volunteer lawyer with the IPSS, a co-op – an oasis of affordable housing in the gentrified U Street corridor – is now better insulated from disasters. When reviewing the co-op`s insurance policies, the lawyer found that the property was significantly undervalued, meaning the co-op would not have been able to rebuild in the event of a disaster.
